This is another fascinating look at the development and workings of the human brain. Sigman begins by looking at the brains of babies and toddlers, that period of life we all go through, and yet have few if any memories of. We tend to think of babies' brains as very simple, but there is in fact a lot of complex activity going on inside those little heads. Babies, by the time they are five months old, can respond to puppet shows that show puppets that help another puppet, and puppets that show another puppet that refuses to help. When offered a choice between the helpful puppet and the unhelpful puppet, the babies prefer the helpful puppet. That's an oversimplified description, but children as young as five months can already choose, and express the choice, for kinder, more helpful behavior. There are other experiments described here that show more complex moral choices babies and very young children are able to make.

For forty years, 1903 to 1943, Martin Couney, the "incubator doctor," both cared for and exhibited premature babies in an incubator facility at Coney Island. He also ran similar facilities at amusement parks and world's fairs around the US and in Mexico, London, Paris, and Brazil.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the medical profession considered it not worthwhile to try to save premature babies. It was assumed that even if they lived, they would always be weak, and not productive. Couney disagreed. He believed, based on an exhibit he may have attended in Berlin, and they one he ran in London, that most of these babies could be saved, with good incubators and good care.

Dr. Walter Freeman was a neurologist, and the man who invented the transorbital lobotomy, performed with surgical picks and a medical hammer. The picks looked like ice picks.
It's not the equipment used, of course, that makes the procedure horrific.
This is a short audiobook, about two hours, but it packs a punch. Freeman began actively, even aggressively, promoting and performing lobotomies in the 1950s in the overcrowded, underfunded mental hospitals of West Virginia.

This is a really enjoyable and informative look at the expanding roles dogs are playing in human health care around the world.
It starts with dogs who are learning to sniff cancer in humans. This is something that started with people's own pets alerting to Something Very Wrong in some part of their owner's body, with the "something wrong" proving to be cancer. It took a while before anecdotal accounts of such incidents began to get the attention of doctors and medical researchers willing and able to follow up on it. This led to to testing dogs on samples that either did, or did not, contain samples of cancer.

Well, that, and that fact that is not shy about speaking up about the absolute nonsense that is the anti-vaccine movement.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon and CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent, gives us a short (46 minutes) but enlightening rumination on children, the pandemic, and how it's affecting us all.
At first, like probably most of us, he assumed the COVID-19 pandemic would be like an earlier coronavirus outbreak: SARS. That was a cause of concern, but was ultimately contained without as much damage as feared, and never had any serious impact on the US. We soon learned that this one is different, for a variety of reasons he doesn't discuss because it's not the point of this audiobook. Six months later, we're wearing masks, limiting our contact with others--and having real conflict over whether or not we send kids to school in the new school year.

A year later, she faced the same choice, and went on to get her Ph.D. in pharmacology--and in the process connected with a professor who encouraged her, pointed her in new directions, and crucially, when the time came, connected her with an opportunity in the US. That embarked her on a path that led to her meeting her husband, Fremont Ellis Kelsey, also a Ph.D. in pharmacology, getting her M.D., and ultimately becoming a medical officer at the FDA.

This is a cultural history of rabies. Bill Wasik is a journalist, and Monica Murphy a veterinarian, and they've put together an amazing, and amazingly readable, account of the history, mythology, and science of rabies, the only disease we know that has a nearly 100% fatality rate.
Rabies kills, and while it's doing that, it drives is victims mad, with interludes of lucidity when they know what's happening to them. It also, though most of history, mostly reached us through the most familiar of our domestic animals, our dogs.
This is perhaps why rabies seems so tied to our myths of vampires and zombies.

Candace Pert, a neuroscientist and discoveror of the opiate receptor, recounts both the intricate relationship between mind, body, and emotions, and her own career uncovering those connections and the neurochemical basis of them. Beginning her career in the early 1970s, gender was an even bigger obstacle than it is now, which no cultural or legal expectation that it shouldn't be. Sometimes she had to fight for recognition of her contributions; other times she had to fight to be able to do the work at all.
But along the way, she made major discoveries, and had life-changing experiences. The mind-body dichotomy was still unquestioned scientific orthodoxy in her early days. She doesn't say, but I will: Rene Descartes has a lot to answer for. Pert's work with neuropeptides and their receptors helps to rebuild the essential unity of the person, mind, body, and emotions, and uncover the connections between our emotional health and our physical health.

Polio Wars: Sister Kenny and the Golden Age of American Medicine, by Naomi Rogers

From around 1900 until the 1950s, when Jonas Salk developed his polio vaccine, the US and other developed countries were stalked by the fear of polio, the dreaded crippler of healthy children and adults. The treatment of polio rested on certain beliefs for which the medical community believed it had ample scientific evidence. Among these was the belief that the polio virus attacked the central nervous system and only the central nervous system--paralysis was the result of lesions on the parts of the brain that controlled those body parts. It was also believed that this caused affected muscles to be flaccid.
Treatment centered around immobilizing the limbs, and even the whole body, with splints or casts. Life-long crippling was believed to be inevitable, and the goal was to avoid deformities and keep the limbs straight and normal-appearing. There were few prospects for the permanently crippled, and institutionalization was frighteningly common.
The person who changed this was not Jonas Salk with his vaccine. He came later. The first liberator of the polio-afflicted was an eccentric Australian bush nurse, Sister Elizabeth Kenny.
Kenny was born in 1880, and after an extended stay with a doctor when she was ill as a child, she developed an interest in medicine and nursing. She worked for years as a bush nurse--the only easily accessible health care in much of small town and wilder regions of Australia. She served as a nurse in the Australian army during World War One (where she acquired the title "Sister," the title that the British and Australians give to senior nurses.) When she returned home after the war and resumed her bush nurse practice, she found herself dealing with growing numbers of polio patients. Without the medical education of a registered or graduate nurse, and with no doctors or hospital nearby, she developed a therapy plan based on her own careful observation of symptoms. Where doctors saw some muscles flaccid, she saw other muscles in spasm, and treated her patients with hot packs, manipulation, and exercise. She concluded that the polio virus did not limit itself to the nervous system, but directly affected muscles and skin.
This was turning not only the treatment but the understanding of polio on its head, and when Sister Kenny took her new therapy and new theory first to Brisbane and then to the UK and the US, she was embarking on a years-long struggle to be heard and to have both her therapy and her theory accepted by the medical profession.
Rogers gives us an enlightening view of Kenny, her supporters, and her critics, in Australia and in her second home in Minnesota in the US. Kenny was such a strong personality, hard-headed and often abrasive, and truly objective information is hard to come by; people loved her or hated her. She was not deferential toward doctors, as both gender and class expectations required; she tended to regard all questions as challenges; and she was so certain she was right that the prospect of controlled studies of her therapy vs. traditional polio therapy seemed deeply unethical and unacceptable. She was also, as mentioned before, abrasive, intolerant of questions, and a much better clinician than a teacher. She didn't make it easy for people to give up their own strongly-held views and adopt hers, instead.
On the other hand, her opponents disliked her therapy in part because she was a nurse demanding to be taken seriously as a medical innovator, and in part because her findings were "empirical"--based on her own clinical experience and observations--rather than "scientific," derived from laboratory work.
Rogers follows Kenny through her years of teaching, promoting, proselytizing her polio therapy, in Australia and the country of her greatest success and greatest frustration, the US. She gives us what is probably as balanced a view of Kenny as is possible. This is a woman who had a tremendous impact on polio treatment, yes, but also on medical attitudes to all crippling diseases and rehabilitation of patients suffering from those diseases or from physical handicaps due to injury. She was a celebrity in America, with friends and connections everywhere, including Hollywood, but rather less so in Australia.
Kenny's fame faded quickly after her death, in part because she died in 1952, just a few years before Salk created the first effective polio vaccine. She revolutionized the treatment of polio, and then treatment of polio became irrelevant in the developed world. That's an excellent development for all of us, but Kenny ought to be better remembered than she is.
