Summer Giveaway Hop
Co-hosted by Inspired Kathy of I Am a Reader Not a Writer and Mary from Bookhounds & Forever Young (Adult)
I'll be giving away a wonderful book, A Dog's Purpose
A Dog's Purpose
This is the story of a dog's lives, and that dog's search for Purpose. Yes, multiple lives, and I hesitate over the choice of a pronoun because this dog spends most of those lives male, but one of them as a female. This might sound silly, but makes for a wonderful story because of the strength of the characterization and the sincere emotion of the tale.
Our narrator's first life is spent as a stray terrier mix mutt who is rescued with his mom and littermates and taken in by a private dog rescuer who has maybe bitten off more than she can chew. The mutt pup is named Toby, and, having learned from his mother to be cautious of humans, now learns that some humans, at least, are to be trusted and loved. Because the Senora and her helpers are struggling at the edge of their ability to provide for the dogs, things go wrong, and this life is short and ends tragically.
And the former Toby is very surprised to wake up again, this time as a Golden retriever puppy in a not-too-awful puppy mill. This leads, after some adventures, to a life with a boy named Ethan, and the dog, now called Bailey, is happy and fulfilled.
When he, now a she, wakes up after the end of that life as a German shepherd puppy, she's sure she must have some great purpose, something she has to accomplish before she can finally rest.
In each life, our dog learns new lessons, both lessons of understanding, and practical skills, which can then be applied in the next life. Love, loyalty, and the desire to be A Good Dog are the dog's guiding lights, and you'll laugh, and cheer, and shed a few tears along the journey.
This is a warm, wonderful read, great for the beach, and you'll look at your own dog a little differently.
Highly recommended.

ReplyDeleteI have an amazing Australian Shepherd named Biscuit that was a rescue. Its a long story, but we found Biscuit the very day he was to have been euthanized. I could ramble on and on about how special he is to us.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this book. It sounds like one of those moving heart warming stories that I never seem to read enough of but always love when I happen to chance upon one.
Thanks for the chance to win this.

This interests me because dogs and animals in general are a big thing to me. All my pets are rescues in there own way. And yet they have always rescued me. I remember in fifth grade my collie was my best friend I told him everything. Not because I had no friends but because my other "friends" turned there back on my and picked on me my whole 5 grade year everyone in my classes included. It was difficult but every day I got home I had him there smiling at me. Today 7 years later he's 12 and I have to be there for him.

I really like the idea that the dog goes through many dog's lives. It sounds like a very good book.
ReplyDeleteAll my animals are rescues. My toughest one was 1 of 3 siamese, I rescued from someone who didn't know how to treat animals. She had been passed around between him and his friends. She had been treated so cruelly, after about the first 6 weeks of having her, I thought I might have to put her down. But, I persisted, and it took years to build up her trust. After 7 years, my son made a breakthough with her, and she now gets in his lap all the time. She has really made a difference in our lives.

My dog Fred was the love of my life, he died after 15 years and my heart went with. He came before our first child and he liked to hang by the crib until we let him sniff each one and then he figured they were his to protect from then on. My youngest of 5 misses him the most. We now have a standard poodle and he is ok, but I miss my Fred. thanks GFC Lisa lisapeters at yahoo.com

I had a dog named Shane growing up, a police trained dog who was a German Shepherd. My mom worked 2 jobs so she had to leave my 4 sisters and I home alone at night a lot, but we always had Shane there to protect us. We were never scared because we knew Shane would never let anyone near us. That's why I would like to read this book, because I miss my dog :)

I love books about dogs. After my heart problems a year or so ago, my little dog got me moving again. He keeps me active with our daily walks.

In rehab to walk again after a near-death MVA, I came across an amazing therapy dog, a golden lab named Goldie. Goldie taught many lessons as she herself had 3 legs! I'll never forget her or her owner.

i think that the idea of past (and future) lives is interesting. and the idea of a dog being able to cognitively think about his current and past lives is a quite intriguing. sounds like a fun and possibly thought provoking read!
